As communications professionals, we’ve always been at the crossroads of storytelling and strategy. But today, we’re stepping into an even more critical role—as strategic business partners shaping the future of organizational success.

A recent Axios report revealed a seismic shift: More chief communication officers (CCOs) are now reporting directly to CEOs, growing from 22% in 2023 to 56% in 2024. This isn't just a change in reporting structures—it's a powerful signal that communications is no longer just about amplifying messages. It’s about shaping decisions, driving innovation, and leading responsibly in areas like ESG, public affairs, and AI integration.

The AI Opportunity for Communicators

AI is reshaping industries, and communications is no exception. From streamlining workflows to crafting data-driven strategies, AI offers tools that amplify our impact. But its adoption also demands responsibility. As communicators, we must:

  • Advocate for ethical AI: Ensuring bias detection, transparency, and trust in every application.

  • Prepare for risks: Crisis communication strategies must now include AI-related challenges.

  • Lead with a human touch: While AI enhances efficiency, it’s our human insight that builds lasting trust and brand integrity.

Why We Deserve a Seat at the Table

Communications isn’t just about reputation management anymore—it’s about navigating geopolitical risks, adapting to technological shifts, and aligning business goals with societal expectations. The rise of CCOs reporting to CEOs reflects this broader mandate.

My POV

We, as communications leaders, must embrace this responsibility. It’s time to champion tools like my PR & AI Risk Readiness Scorecard to ensure organizations adopt AI thoughtfully and transparently. It's not just about adopting the tech—it’s about shaping the narrative and ensuring that AI aligns with our values and vision.

Let’s Keep the Momentum

AI is here to stay, and so is our responsibility to lead its adoption with foresight and care. Let’s ensure communications continues to be the connective tissue of strategy, reputation, and innovation.

I’d love to hear your thoughts—how is your organization adapting to AI? Are you seeing a shift in how communications leaders are valued in your company?

Here’s to building a future where communications doesn’t just have a seat at the table—we’re helping design it.
